Uttar Pradesh’s First GEC-II Linked Solar Project Goes Live with Sunsure’s 105 MWp Plant

By Junaid Shah

Sunsure Energy has commissioned a 105 MWp solar power project in Mahoba district, Uttar Pradesh, claiming it to be the first renewable energy project to evacuate electricity through the state’s Green Energy Corridor-II (GEC-II) infrastructure.

Completed in about four months from the signing of the power purchase agreement (PPA), the project, located in Kabrai village, is also claimed to be one of the fastest utility-scale solar project deployments in the state.

The solar plant is connected to the grid through a dedicated 7-km, 132 kV transmission line and evacuates power via the newly operational 220 kV Kabrai substation. This marks the first instance of renewable electricity being transmitted through Uttar Pradesh’s Green Energy Corridor-II network.

The GEC-II project, being developed by the Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL), involves an investment of nearly ₹5,400 crore to establish 21 substations and supporting transmission infrastructure. The corridor is designed to facilitate the evacuation of around 4 GW of solar power from the Bundelkhand region.

Annual Generation to Exceed 167 Million Units

Spread across 282 acres, the solar project is expected to generate more than 16.7 crore units of clean electricity annually. According to the company, the output is sufficient to meet the yearly power requirements of nearly 1.4 lakh households.

The project is also expected to offset around 1.2 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, with lifetime emissions reductions estimated at nearly 3 million tonnes.

With the commissioning of the Mahoba project, Sunsure Energy’s operational portfolio in Uttar Pradesh has now grown to 11 facilities with a combined capacity of 365 MWp.

The company said it plans to further expand its footprint in the state through its UP Shakti initiative, launched in 2023. Sunsure aims to increase its operational capacity in Uttar Pradesh to 500 MW by the end of FY26.

As part of this expansion strategy, the company is also developing a 125 MW/500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), which is expected to be commissioned by FY26.

Portfolio and Recent Developments

Sunsure currently operates around 800 MW of renewable energy assets and has more than 7.1 GW under various stages of development and construction across multiple states. The company has set a target of achieving 10 GW of operational renewable energy capacity by 2030. Sunsure Energy supplies renewable power to several major industrial consumers, including LG Electronics, Kajaria Ceramics, Jindal Stainless, Dabur and Bisleri.

Sunsure Energy has recently secured a solar PPA with JAKSON Engineering for powering UP facilities. In March 2026, the company also secured ₹606.22 crore in debt financing across multiple renewable energy projects from Aseem Infrastructure Finance Limited and RBL Bank.
