EIA: Biofuel feedstock consumption reaches 27.973 billion pounds in April

U.S. biofuel producers consumed 27.973 billion pounds of feedstock in April, down nearly 8% when compared to March, but up 4% when compared to April 2025, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on June 30. 

Biofuel producers consumed 24.07 billion pounds of corn in April, down from 26.594 billion pounds the previous month, but up from 23.703 billion pounds in April 2025. 

Sorghum consumption reached 550 million pounds in April, down from 560 million pounds in March, but up from 547 million pounds in April of last year.

Biofuel producers consumed 1.224 billion pounds of soybean oil in April, including 686 million pounds consumed by biodiesel plants and 537 million pounds consumed by renewable diesel facilities. Soybean oil consumption was at 1.283 billion pounds in March, with 697 million pounds consumed for biodiesel and 587 million pounds consumed for renewable diesel, and at 829 million pounds in April 2025, with 575 million pounds consumed for biodiesel and 255 million pounds consumed for renewable diesel. 

Corn oil consumption expanded to 477 million pounds in April, up from 432 million pounds in March and 293 million pounds in April 2025. Canola oil consumption was at 365 million pounds in April, down from 403 million pounds the previous month, but up from 135 million pounds in April of last year. The EIA does not currently break down corn oil or canola oil consumption by producer type. 

According to EIA, biofuel producers also consumed 103 million pounds of other vegetable oil as feedstock in April, down from 144 million pounds the previous month. 

In addition, biofuel producers consumed 660 million pounds of tallow, 471 million pounds of yellow grease and 53 million pounds of white grease in April. Consumption was at 559 million pounds, 314 million pounds and 48 million pounds, respectively, in March, and at 770 million pounds, 445 million pounds and 54 million pounds, respectively, in April 2025.
