Tamil Nadu: TNCSC steps up protection measures for paddy storage amid rain threats

In view of the increasing risk of paddy bags getting drenched and grains getting damaged during heavy rains, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) has directed its regional-level officials to strengthen the use of waterproof black polyethylene (BP) covers at covered and plinth (CAP) open storage points, particularly in the delta districts.
According to TNCSC sources, the number of CAP open storage points rose significantly following a substantial surge in paddy productivity last year, with production increasing by at least 50% across the delta districts.
After procuring paddy directly from farmers at direct procurement centres (DPC), the bags are moved to closed warehouses, while the remainder is sent to semi-covered facilities and open CAP storage points. Consequently, several lakhs of paddy bags remain stacked at various locations, awaiting transportation to hulling mills and wagon rakes.
The urgency of the directive was underscored by a recent incident in Patteeswaram near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, where thousands of paddy bags stacked in the open were severely drenched and damaged due to heavy rains.

With rainfall patterns becoming increasingly unpredictable, senior TNCSC officials have strongly urged regional teams to stock adequate quantities of durable BP covers. They have instructed officials in the delta districts to ensure that all paddy stacks are fully covered from top to bottom to prevent any exposure to rainwater.
Regional-level officials have been warned that failure to implement proper covering could lead to damage similar to the Patteeswaram incident. Additionally, they have been directed to expedite the movement of stored paddy bags to minimise risks and ensure timely processing.
