Isobutanol-Diesel Blend Explained: India’s Next Biofuel Push?

By Rohit Singh

As India imports over 85% of its crude oil, finding a domestic alternative to diesel isn’t optional, but urgent. The government tried the obvious route first, blending ethanol with diesel, the same way it pushed E20 in petrol. It didn’t hold up. Ethanol and diesel don’t mix well chemically, and the 10% blending trials quietly fell apart.

Now, the conversation is revolving around isobutanol – a biofuel that’s actually derived from ethanol but behaves differently, blends far more easily with diesel, carries more energy per litre, and is less corrosive to powertrain components.

Early testing suggests existing diesel vehicles may need only minor modifications to run on blended fuel, which matters enormously when you’re talking about millions of trucks and buses on Indian roads.

MoRTH secretary V. Umashankar said at a CII summit in Delhi that a formal blending mandate is being considered seriously and could come through later this year.

The commercial sector is the main target. That’s where diesel consumption is the highest, where import exposure is most acute, and where a blending mandate would have the most meaningful long-term impact.

What is isobutanol?

The focus on isobutanol is increasing as the biofuel works differently from ethanol blends that are currently being used in the market. Unlike ethanol, isobutanol can mix with diesel fuel without separating, allowing it to be used in diesel engines without affecting the fuel system.

Its energy density is closer to conventional diesel, which could help engines maintain their output while reducing smoke emissions. It does not absorb water either, which lowers the risk of rust and corrosion inside fuel tanks, injectors, and pumps.

Initial studies further suggest that isobutanol can be used in existing diesel cars, trucks, and tractors without requiring major mechanical changes, making it an option that could keep diesel mobility alive in India.
