Tamil Nadu: Five held with 2,200kg of smuggle ration rice in Erode

Cops attached to the district Civil Supplies Crime Investigation Department (Civil Supplies-CID) on Thursday arrested five people for smuggling 2,200kg ration rice.

An official source said the five were nabbed based on a specific tip that a gang was attempting to smuggle ration rice in Valasu Postal Nagar area of Vettukkadu.

A team of Civil Supplies-CID police conducted a vehicle check and found a goods carrier with 44 bundles of ration rice weighing 2,200kg around 1.30am. The team seized the ration rice and the goods carrier, and arrested five people, who were identified as V Prabhu, 38; M Shankar, 31; K Senthil Kumar, 29; K Suresh Kumar, 34; and M Malaisamy, 36, all residents of Valasu Postal Nagar area.

The source said the ration rice was purchased from local households for smuggling purposes.

The arrested five were produced before a local court and lodged in the district prison at Gobichettipalayam under judicial custody.
