India boosts bioenergy with ₹998 crore MNRE funding

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy  is investing ₹998 crore in the National Bioenergy Programme Phase I for the period 2022–23 to 2025–26, providing Central Financial Assistance to eligible bioenergy projects across India.

The Indian government has promoted various bioenergy projects, such as biogas, biomass power, bagasse cogeneration in sugar mills, and energy from urban, industrial, and agricultural waste.

Government data showed the country has installed 2.36 GW of biomass power, 227.56 MW equivalent of waste-to-energy capacity, and nearly 2.9 lakh biogas plants, reflecting the scale of grid-connected bioenergy deployment, according to a press release.

Whilst the deployment is uneven, these projects are situated in agriculturally and industrially strong states.

This is aligned with India’s broader bioenergy policy framework and earlier government schemes.
