EU pulses production to decline by 6% in 2025

According to the European Commission, the EU pulse production is expected to be down 6% in 2025 compared to the previous year. This means that the yield remains above average. The largest decrease was recorded in the field pea crop.

According to estimates at the end of April, the European Commission expects the EU pulse harvest to be just over 6.3 million tonnes in 2025; this is 6% less than in the previous year. The 2017 record of 6.9 million tonnes (EU-28) was also clearly not reached. According to Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (mbH), the decline is primarily due to a reduction in the cultivated area by almost 19%. The yield is currently estimated at 22.7 t/ha, which is above the previous year’s level of 20.7 t/ha.

In particular, less fodder peas will be harvested – 1.8 million tons, which is 11% less than in the previous year. Soybeans remain the most important legume crop in the Union: its production volume is almost 2.9 million tons, and its share in the total legume harvest is 45%. Due to the smaller area of ​​​​sown, the harvest is expected to be 3% lower than last year. The area under beans is also decreasing. The European Commission estimates production in the EU at 1.3 million tons; This is about 9% less than in the previous year. The sweet lupine harvest alone is expected to be 341,000 tons, which will exceed the previous year’s result of 318,000 tons.
